Spanish Conquest Article - Ron

the Incan empire had ruled their land since 1200, for almost over 300 years. But their huge empire has fallen because of a disease called smallpox brought by early visitors of Europe (mainly Spanish), the civil war between Atahualpa and Huascar, the last heirs of the empire, and lastly, the invadors from Spain.

Before the Spanish invadors arrived. The civil war started between the two sons of Huayna capac, Atahualpa and Huascar.

Almost 100,000 people were killed in this bloody dispute. After many struggles, Atahualpa finally defeated Huascar. Before Atahualpa became a king, he treated the losers terribly.

After sending Huascar to prison, Atahualpa took the throne. He paid a terrible price for his cruelty, as it had contributed to the weakening of the empire. It was at this critical moment that the Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizarro arrived.

Francisco Pizarro and his brothers were attracted by the news of a rich and fabulous kingdom.

They arrived in Inca territory in 1531, which they called Peru.

They pretended to be friendly to the king Atahualpa, at first. But soon, they figured out that the Incan empire was falling down because of the civil war and the death of many people from a smallpox.

Pizarro and his soldiers could conquer the empire and capture Atahualpa easily and the one factor was that they had much stronger weapons and armors.

The another factor that Spanish could conquer the Inca with a little number of soldiers was that the people of the Inca were dying of a smallpox and weakening of the empire because of the civil war that recently happened.

After the execution of Atahualpa, Pizarro made Atahualpas brother, Tupac Huallpa, as a puppet ruler of the Inca, but he soon died unexpectedly.

Since the death of Tupac Huallpa, there were several wars between the Incans and Spanish. Then in 1572, the Spanish finally completed the conquest. It took 40 years for Pizarro to complete the conquest since he captured Atahualpa and started attacking the Incan empire.
